Hilti Art Foundation (White Cube, Vaduz)
Lasa marble chippings for the building of the Hilti Art Foundation and Huber Fine Watches & Jewellery
After a planning and construction period of almost eight years, an exceptional building, the "White Cube", has been shining since May 2015 in the heart of Vaduz. The 20 metre high building, a futuristic cubic building, is an extension of the adjacent black Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein. The striking new building consists of a solid concrete construction in white. For the white concrete façade, Lasa Marmo supplied around 1,100 tonnes of the finest Lasa marble chippings as an additive. The white concrete was produced on site and poured into the building fabric. Finally, the façade of white concrete was honed.
The Hilti Art Foundation, the art foundation of the globally active Liechtenstein construction industry supplier Hilti, ended up with its own exhibition building via this extension. The building, designed by Basel architects Morger + Dettli, forms a unit with the adjacent State Art Museum. Both the cubic form and the construction, as well as the material of the façade, reflect the unity of the two buildings under the roof of a museum.
On two floors, the "White Cube" also houses collector's items and rare highlights of the Huber Fine Watches and Jewellery shop. The very finely ground elements of Lasa marble, one of the main components of the white concrete, lend the building a particularly bright and luminous colour in a very unusual way. The building thus exudes a special aura. When the sun shines, the "White Cube" sparkles and glitters like a diamond. Modern architecture, art, watches and jewellery as well as Lasa marble chippings combined as an additive in the white concrete make the building a very special construction object and enrich the capital of the Principality of Liechtenstein with a further urban attraction.
In 2017, the building received the Liechtenstein Architecture Prize for Good Building. In 2016, the "Weiße Würfel (White Cube)" received the "DETAIL" prize, awarded by the international magazine of the same name for architecture and building detail.
