U.S. Tobacco Company Building
In 2016, the building received an award as an outstanding building in its category
In 1970, Lasa Marmo supplied marble of the commercial grade LASA VENATO® for the cladding of the entire exterior facades of the office complex built on 15,000 square meters, intended for the new construction of the U.S. Tobacco Company headquarters in Greenwich (Connecticut), USA. The architect George 'Bud' Murray, who lived and worked in Greenwich, was responsible for the architectural design and construction of the building. Two striking, separate office buildings were erected: a circular office tower and a rectangular office building next to it. After the tobacco company moved out in 2006, the property was converted into a multifunctional office building complex by the new owner and now bears the name of the identical address "100 West Putnam Avenue".
An extension, a curved glass facade, provided the previously separate building parts with a new connecting atrium and a common lobby. Large parts of the four-story exterior facades, exposed to wind and weather for over 30 years, can now be found unproblematically in the interior of the building via the new extension. Like glass sky bridges, the newly created glass extension connects the 30-meter-high facades made of Lasa marble of the two formerly separate building structures. The atrium itself not only serves as an architecturally impressively designed reception area but also combines amenities such as a concierge service, a café, a fitness center, charging stations for electric vehicles, and more. Located at an important location on one of the city's most prestigious streets, the new owner used the newly created atrium as a visual connection to Greenwich's business district to create a new centrally located attractive office and service center. In 2016, the building at 100 West Putnam Avenue received the "TOBY" (The Outstanding Building of the Year) award, a prize presented by the "BOMA" (Building Owners and Management Association) for the most outstanding building of the year in the 100,000-249,999 square foot category.
