400 million years agoOrigin of Lasa's marble

The massif from which Lasa’s marble is extracted stands on the North-East side of the Ortles mountain chain, near Lasa, about 40 km west of Merano.

The limestone deposited 400 million years ago in North Africa was transformed into white metamorphic marble due to the pressure of geological layers that reached temperatures of 600°. This mass was then shifted towards the area of Lasa during the Variscan Orogeny. The deposit is estimated to be approximately 500 million m³ in volume.
