1935Foundation of the Stelvio National Park

In 1935 Mussolini’s fascist government founded the Stelvio National Park, which included four provinces (Bolzano, Trento, Brescia and Sondrio) and originally protected an area of 96,000 hectares (134,622 today). The marble extracting areas were also included in the area of the National Park.

The population of the area declared as National Park saw this initiative as yet another reprisal of the fascist power. Rome had intentionally drawn the boundaries of the National Park on very specific maps and with a number of conditions that would affect the work in the marble quarries ever since.
