Bavarian and Prussian lion, Feldherrnhalle, Munich
Protecting both sides of the staircase of the Feldherrnhalle (Generals’ Hall) in Munich are two colossal lions carved from Lasa marble. The marble lions were added in 1905 to the Feldherrnhalle, which was built between 1841 and 1844 by order of King Ludwig I. A monument was to be erected to honour the Bavarian army and its victorious commanders. The "Loggia di Lanzi" in Florence served as an architectural model. The lions were made by the sculptor Wilhelm von Rümann (1850-1906), who worked at the Academy of Art in Munich.
