Rayyane Tabet
Brief biography of the artist
Rayyane Tabet (born 1983, Achqout, Lebanon) is an artist who lives and works in Beirut. Tabet draws from his experiences and his own research. He explores stories that offer an alternative understanding of important socio-political events through individual narratives. Based on his education in architecture and sculpture, his work explores paradoxes in the built environment and its history through installations that reconstruct perceptions of physical and temporal distance.
His current and upcoming exhibitions include the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Parasol Unit in London, The Louvre in Paris, Carré d'Art in Nîmes, Kunstverein in Hamburg and Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam. His work has been shown at Manifesta 12, the 21st Sydney Biennial, the 15th Istanbul Biennial, the 32nd São Paulo Biennial, the 6th Marrakech Biennial, the 10th and 12th Sharjah Biennials and the 2nd New Museum Triennial.
Fault Line
The starting point of almost all Rayyane Tabet's projects, as well as the resulting artworks, is the exploration of histories, using personal narratives to provide an alternative understanding of important events. Through independent research and often by incorporating pre-existing elements and materials, Tabet's sculptures attempt to tell the story of specific objects, combining subjective readings with biographical notes of the artist and/or people he encounters during the realisation of a project.
Rayyane Tabet was invited by the Antonio Dalle Nogare Foundation to open the exhibition programme of the newly conceived foundation. The artist conducted a year-long research project on the diverse histories of Bolzano (Bozen) and South Tyrol. The result is a large site-specific installation consisting of three different elements (marble, steel and painting) entitled Fault Line. This work by Rayyane Tabet represents, on the one hand, three layers of the region's diverse landscape and, at the same time, reflects, on the other hand, three different socio-economic moments in the history of Bolzano (Bozen) and South Tyrol.
Vincenzo de Bellis, Curator
Using 120 tonnes of Lasa marble powder, the Tabet has created a landscape that is reminiscent of both the moon and the mountains. On the walls around it, a continuous link of 1550 Bolzano Superinox razor blades marks out an ideal horizon, while in the centre of the room, a watercolor from the Antonio Dalle Nogare collection by the artist Hans Josef Weber-Tyrol (1874-1957) is displayed on an easel. The painting is positioned so it faces the outside of the building and therefore creates and immediate dialogue with the surrounding landscape that the entire installation is a tribute to.
