Even though the marble had been deemed suitable, preparation and extraction attempts were interrupted after some time. The difficulty in extracting and transporting the blocks proved to be excessive.
Despite this episode, some local residents began to identify a promising market potential in the marble industry. Josef Blaas, innkeeper of the Sternwirt in Silandro, owned Schmidinger’s extraction rights for Covelano for some time and Ludwig Veith, from the Kronen inn in Lasa, obtained permission to extract in 6 marble quarries of the Lasa valley from Hall’s Court of Mines.
