Lasa Marmo manufactured and supplied around 3,500 m² of trapezoidal floor tiles and herringbones in the LASA BIANCO ORTLES® marble variety between 2016 and 2017 as decorative and ornamental elements for the communal corridors and hallways of the new Hudson Yards mega-mall on the West Side of Manhattan, which opened on the 15th of March 2019.
The floor slabs for this superlative shopping centre were produced by Lasa Marmo in a thickness of 3 cm and with polished surfaces. The cold-tempered coloured Lasa marble of the LASA BIANCO ORTLES® variety, with its scattered light bluish-grey graphite streaks, was chosen by the award-winning British architecture and engineering firm Foster and Partners as the ideal contrasting pattern to the flooring, which is predominantly in strong grey and black tones. The designers' aim was to reflect the special urban atmosphere of the metropolis also within the shopping centre and to raise it to the required level of the high-end companies located in the mall using the finest materials, such as Lasa marble. Hudson Yards is Manhattan's largest, newest and hottest commercial and residential district in the Big Apple. Built on a four-acre, million-dollar slab of reinforced concrete over 30 sidings for Long Island Rail Road commuter trains, six new striking skyscrapers tower into the Midtown Manhattan sky between 10th and 11th Avenues and W 30th and W 33rd Streets. With its focus on the buildings' gleaming shells, the effect of reflective blue glass and the sheen of polished wood, brass, leather, marble and stone, Hudson Yards imbues the metropolis on the Hudson River with a kind of surface spectacle - as if the highest ambitions of city life in a vibrant metropolis like New York were shaped exclusively by the consumption of luxury goods and the indulgence of a seductive, mindless materialism. All in all, Hudson Yards indeed embodies a close-up view of architecture as a luxury brand. Commissioned by US entrepreneur and billionaire Stephen M. Ross, the new district, which when fully completed in 2024, will include commercial and residential buildings, as well as arts and cultural facilities and a school, sees itself as a model for the future of cities. In the central LEED Gold-certified mega-mall, several brand stores of luxury brands such as Cartier, Rolex, Tiffany & Co. and Dior, fulfil these special demands on around 76,000 m². Loosely based on Stephan M. Ross' motto: "This is New York as it should be, with everything you want on your doorstep." And Lasa Marmo processed and refined Lasa marble is part of it.
