The Lechner family still owns the rights to quarry the local marble and Georg J. Lechner, a member of the well-known marble dynasty, continues the family tradition today, managing in the late ‘80s the workshops which produce various fine examples of art and craftsmanship. The company’s most popular lines include souvenirs and presents as well special, made-to-order columns, table-tops and the like. In 1992, Georg J. Lechner and his partner, Swiss investor and entrepreneur Bernhard Burgener, together founded the “Lechner Marmor JSC” with the declared intention of re-opening the Lechner family quarries which had been closed for a number of decades yet, before they could do so, they were faced with a number of bureaucratic obstacles. The company which today holds an enviable place on the market and is, in fact, still developing in its chosen business sector, finally obtained permission to re-open the Jennwand quarry in 1996. The competent authorities agreed to the reopening of the quarry on condition that the company promised to use its very particular funicular railway to transport the marble from the quarries to the company’s works.
